GeoWoodstock XV was the 2nd GW hosted by the North Carolina Geocachers Organization in North Carolina. GWV was in Raleigh in 2007. Ten years later, we wanted to show off the western part of our state and selected the Waynesville County fairgrounds as our venue. Very near the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains and many other areas with superb hiking opportunities, Waynesville has a quaint downtown with many nice shops and restaurants.
Waynesville is in Asheville's back yard for plenty of fun. Most events leading up to GW XV were held in or near Asheville, a city with a distinct mountain vibe. It is known for its artists, great restaurants and a burgeoning beer scene with more breweries per capita than almost any place in the country.
The traditional Friday Meet and Greet lasted most of the day and was in the US Cellular Center which afforded attendees the opportunity to stroll around downtown Asheville to sample some of it's eclectic charm. Other events included a stop at a repurposed salvage yard, a folkart center and a CITO that was both unique and very rewarding. Our special outing was a train ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad that included a lunch event at the turnaround stop.
Our "logs" for the Friday event and for GWXV will long be remembered. Friday's was a "photo booth" where you could get your picture taken with the log to resemble a Facebook post. It was also available on Saturday with the GWXV log in the background. GWXV's log, a vintage VW Beetle painted in a rainbow of colors was meant to bring to mind the original Woodstock and the laid back atmosphere that JoGPS intended. The BBQ meal was a hit and GWXV was the first to have 20 lab caches for finders.
Who knows, maybe we'll be back here in another 10 years for GWXXV in 2027!
